Possible to disable side button on this mortise lock without disassembling? I’m ok with paying a locksmith to disassemble and remove the buttons if needed, but I notice that the top button has a slot so I’m curious if it could just be disabled. : Locksmith

Gotcha. Thank you for confirming!

Dealership and local locksmith are both lost as to what this means, getting my carfax now but curious if anyone here has any clue : Locksmith

That’s a print out showing the dealership tried to run the vehicles VIN in order to retrieve the key code and PIN code. In this case, for whatever reason, Nissan says they don’t have that information for your vehicle. It happens with Nissan, and it happens way too much.

anyone able to identify this lock? [London, UK] it’s the roof door in our apartment we bought 5 years ago but never had the key 🧐lockdownhas me curious and couldn’t find anything on google 🤔 : Locksmith

would rather find the company and ask them to send a replacement key tbh given i’m out of work atm and locksmith prices here aren’t the most affordable. besides this isn’t a pressing issue, hence why i thought someone might be able to identify 😌

Curious about becoming a locksmith : Locksmith

I know essentially nothing about being a locksmith. I’ve spent the last 5 years bartending, thinking about becoming a locksmith instead. Would you guys reccomend a specific online course? If I was thinking about doing a mobile setup what would the estimated cost of tools be? If I put a cap on the back of my F350(8.2 foot bed) would that be a sufficient amount of workspace/storage? My state requires no certification or accreditation, but which ones should I get? Any advice for total newbs? Whats your favorite thing about the job?

Been curious about this for a hot minute. I’ve been seeing these codes on the locks for awhile while putting on/rekeying locks my associates tell me that they’re part numbers? Is that true (I’m a newish locksmith round a year year and a half) be awesome if anyone could fill me in!

ELI5 the mechanisms of this kind of door knob. Every other door knob I’ve seen in my life has the inside knob also unable to turn when locked. I’m not a locksmith so I won’t know the jargon; I’m just really curious. : Locksmith

The feature is called emergency egress, the higher grade Schlage you can find in Home Depot have them, otherwise it’s not typical of crappy locks. The idea is that if you’re escaping a fire, burglar, or uncle joe, you’re able to leave without having to think about unlocking the door in a panic. Trust me, If you see uncle joe in your house, you will be panicking. Lock hardware in Home Depot is typically trash.

As for how it actually works, the inside knob is not directly attracted to the lock actuator like the outside knob is until it’s turned to a certain degree. Turning the inside knob to that degree makes contact with the actuator and unlocks the door for the outside. The lock actuator is a long rod (ha) which the back end you turn to lock or unlock it.
