Smart Locks for Folding and Swing Doors : Locksmith

Hi r/Locksmith

Sorry if this the wrong place, I asked this on r/HomeImprovement and wanted to get some more thoughts.

When looking at packages for back patio folding doors plus swing doors for daily use, I notice that the vendors of these products (NanaWall/LaCantina/Western Window Systems/etc…) don’t appear to support to 3rd party cylindrical locks or mortise hardware that are used by smart locks for keyless entries. By smart locks, I mean popular mainstream products such as Kwikset, Yale, August, etc…

Is it possible to configure these types of doors with typical hardware to support smart locks? I was also suggested to look at Adam’s Rite hardware or other access control methods that may end up being more expensive than going with more traditional type doors.

Hi, can anyone advise me on which brand and style of lock this is in order to replace it. It’s not an emergency so I can’t call someone out due to covid restrictions. My pet gets into the kitchen when I’m cooking. All the doors have this lock but when I moved in i was told they never kept the keys! : Locksmith

It’s a Union Mortice lock. Google that and can find what you’re looking for. Better yet, just get a locksmith to make a key for the current lock. Most states field service locksmiths have been considered essential the whole way thru this. Mask and PPE is standard issue now days.

Why are key fobs standard for cars but not doors? : Locksmith

With a car’s remote key fob, you can easily lock/unlock your car from a distance, and this is standard technology.

I know there are app-based smart locks and other NFC-type “touchless” locks for homes/businesses, but why isn’t there simple remote locking technology that’s //standard// for doors, like the front door to one’s home?

Not sure if this is the best sub to post this question, so please let me know if there is somewhere else I should go. Thanks!

Is a strike plate required for hollow metal doors Medeco Maxum? : Locksmith

Is a strike plate required for hollow metal doors Medeco Maxum?

Recently got a Medeco Maxum installed by my lock smith. He convinced me that a strike plate is not required as the door frame is metal. So he just cut out a hole big enough for the deadbolt. (The door frame is hollow screwed onto a wooden stud). Is this true? The hollow door is metal as well.

How can I secure these doors from being opened via a J-Tool type bypass? : Locksmith

This is where you run into building codes issues. Locking the handles together eliminates a path of egress, which isn’t ok. Installing an astragal and coordinator may be ok depending on the building capacity, because it requires people to use only on of the doors for ingress/egress which can also be an issue. It looks like you have an adams rite style bolt, so the most likely attack is a crowbar. A “J” tool, I presume you’re taking about a DDT, won’t work gear because you don’t have exit devices. Really the best thing you could do it get an alarm and a safe for anything highly valuable.

I have a Glass cabinet (Curio), Double door, Hinge open, 3mm Thick glass doors. How can I lock this? Amazon seems lacking. Most of the locks meant for hinge are a 8mm thickness minimum. I’m not trying to keep out smart people. Any crappy lock will do. Thanks!

Good brand doors? Steves brand door won’t accept Abloy strikebox : Locksmith

Hopefully this is a good place to post

My current basic Steves and Sons doors have this weird metal “reinforcing” strip all down the side, with a small hole for the strikeplate. This makes install a strikeBOX from my Abloy locks with the expanding bolt completely impossible without some really, really, really hard work

I want to replace the doors with standard doors with no windows, and I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for doors?
