Master Key/ matching master key to a new lock ???? : Locksmith

So I recently lost the key to my front door. I contacted my landlord, who told me he only had a master key, no spare keys. He suggested that I have my roommate, who was out of town for several weeks traveling for work, send me her key and I could go to a locksmith and replace it. I didn’t do this, I guess because I’m lazy, and also because I wanted to be able to lock my door when I went to work that week. Instead, I contacted a locksmith, had him come to my apartment, I asked him to just replace the key, that I didn’t need a new lock. It was probably just a miscommunication, but the locksmith replaced the entire lock, I didn’t realize the until my roommate returned and her old key didn’t work. I contacted my landlord again and told him about what happened, and he told me to have the locksmith come back to my apartment, he’d meet us there, and have the locksmith “match the lock/ rekey the lock, to his master key”. I know this is super long winded, but is this even possible? I have no clue what a master key is, and I have no idea how I’d go about explaining what I need to the locksmith. If anyone could clarify this for me, that’d be really great! Thank you!

Is there any company that sells mortise hardware that takes a normal key? Want to keep this door original but also want to key it with the rest of the buildings master key system. : Locksmith

I am a locksmith, i cant find any supplier that carries a modern mortise lock that has a similar look and doesnt still take a skeleton key, just looking for a brand or supplier recommendation. I can also just retrofit a knob and deadbolt to it but i want to keep the original look.

Can the creation of a new master key (with a chip) cause the valet key to stop working? : Locksmith

I had a new master key made and it works great. However, my valet key did stop working shortly after (the car will turn over but not start). It does have some corrosion on it, so the key could just be broken, but the weird thing is that my automatic start won’t work either now.

Could the locksmith have reset the “code” to start the car and now my other keys are ‘wrong’?

This apartment rekey on an undocumented master system feels like a trap : Locksmith

I just got a call for an apartment building. they have a tenant that wants her lock changed “Someone keeps breaking in” (yeah my first one of these) asking for more information they have a master system with master, GM and operating keys. They’re on everest, it looks like 7pin the apartments are LFIC except the front outer door. They don’t have any contact for whoever installed it, but they have the M, GM, Control and all the operating keys. . . . I feel like I may have to document their whole system just to change 1 lock. It’ll be a great learning experience, but holy fuck me! 24 apartments and 1 outer door. Do I read all the keys, record into a master sheet, eyeball the lot and guess a new apartment biting and match the master? . . I’m excited for the opportunity, but also curious of their budget for a single apartment rekey. it’s going to take hours to document everything.

The previous maintenance man had some code written down. it’s stamped into the GM key and doesn’t match the bitting. I’m guessing it’s a blind code, or file reference for whoever set it up.

Aaand digging a bit more, it’s a senior living facility. I may just drive out for a consult and get a little better scope of their actual need, maintenance staff and the likes.

Am I the last locksmith on the planet that still creates my own master key systems by hand? Whats a decent program a guy can get that does some but not alot of master keying. : Locksmith

The problem with the software is it can’t do really weird and unique shit where you need to do cross keying which when you need to do it, can be complicated as fuck. The natural progression of masters, sub masters, change keys/slaves, is pretty easy, especially if you have a grand master that are low cuts because you can go deeper for the subs. As opposed to where as grand master with say a midcut can get dicey when the system gets huge and complicated and you have the issue of possible ghost keys.
