Converting Schlage SC1 (5-pin) cylinder to accept SC4 (6-pin) key : Locksmith

I had a similar issue to this post by /u/dt_mt2014

I have a 6-pin Schlage key that I wanted to use in a 5-pin SC1 knob. However, the residential knob is too short to accept a 6-pin SC4 KiK cylinder, so a cylinder swap wasn’t possible. Likewise, I didn’t find much online when searching for alternate solutions.

However, it turns out that the blocking item for the longer key is simply the bottom center of the cylinder tailpiece.

So, with some careful filing of the tailpiece, the longer SC4 key can pass under the tailpiece and will protrude slightly beyond the back of the keyway, but it doesn’t protrude enough to extend beyond the plane of the tailcap.

Therefore, pinning the 5-pin KiK cylinder to the first 5 pins of the 6-pin SC4 key allows the lock to operate as normal with both a 5-pin and 6-pin key.

A picture to show the filing work on the tailpiece (from ~4 o’clock to 6 o’clock). ~20 mins with small triangle / half-moon files. It would have been faster if I were less cautious. 🙂

Leaving this here in case it helps someone in the future.

Sc1 core but the pins are smaller in diameter. Anyone know why or have any info on this pulled it out of a deadbolt. : Locksmith

I have a question… are the chambers drilled for standard pins or are they drilled for small pins? Just trying to understand if someone used Best-type pins. I know Schlage makes SFIC cores, but don’t know if they use 0.108 diam. pins or standard since I’ve never seen one.

Locksmiths, are there different-headed keys for the common Schlage SC1 key? : Locksmith

I hate the wide roughly triangular shaped heads on most schalge keys. Too wide.

When I was a kid my house key was a schlage key, but had a non typical schlage key head. It was very slim in comparison.

So, could you guys provide some examples of key blanks that are different than the regular schlage key heads?

Looking to purchase rim cylinders with SC1 keyway! : Locksmith

I am hoping someone here might have two rim cylinders available with an SC1 keyway in gold/brass. I need the two cylinders with decorative rings for the front and the mounting hardware (basically the whole package).

I am going to be replacing my doorknobs with Schlage knobs and I currently have “jimmy proof” deadbolts installed so I do not want to have to mess with the interior side of the deadbolt. That would involve fixing the door, door jamb, molding, etc.

If anyone has them for sale please let me know I am looking to get them quickly. Thanks!
