Looking for a professional opinions please! A guest of my neighbour got the wrong house & just accidentally got in using my neighbour’s key. Could this be down to chance or is my lock likely broken? Thanks v much! : Locksmith

ERA British Standard latch – these are often installed incorrectly by builders. Scarily often. If they left the cylinder screws out and only used the escutcheon screws to fasten it in place, the cylinder can sometimes rotate with any key. That’s more likely than the two locks being keyed the same.

Edit: I’ve just seen the filler! £10 and a bag of smarties says that the builder couldn’t get it lined up properly so chucked out or loosened some screws

Easy test to do to find out, but hard to explain. Give me 10 mins and I’ll make a video.

Best IC Core brand question.. to my knowledge all best brand IC cores are engraved/stamped with “BEST” on the face.. Am I wrong about this or is somebody trying to pass around off brand locks? : Locksmith

I think the good brand ones have their names on them, Best, Schlage, etc.. It’s the more generic brands that don’t have any markings, like General Lock, KSP, etc.. Could be wrong, hard to say, there probably are minute differences between them that a real lock sleuth could figure out. Some people want to pay the premium for the brands, others dont. Some people try to pass the unbranded stuff off as the “real deal” though I’m sure.

Hey folks, bought the wrong sided lock and didn’t realise, is there any way to reverse the catch or should I take it back to the shop? Cheers!(uk, assa abloy union ) : Locksmith

Take a photo of your whole lock body. Chances are it’s reversible.

And I just saw your post on r/woodworking. 😳

When people tell us we’re too expensive, this is the kind of shit I point them towards. 5 hours later you have cheap shit hinges, a cheap shit lock (at a second attempt) and enormous gaps around the door after you attacked it with a plane for no reason. Alternatively, you could have had a locksmith open it for you with no/minimal damage for about £75-100.

Electronic handle set clicking – What’s wrong? : Locksmith

Electrified mortise lock.

Presenting a credential to the reader powers the lock. Clicking should allow the handle to turn and retract the latch. With everything apart, I have no idea if the handle will turn when the lock is energized.

Put the lock back together and test it, or give us a description of the problem.

Hoping someone can help me out. I just used my ignition key to unlock my saddle bag which is wrong key and now it’s stuck. Any advice? : Locksmith

A good experienced locksmith can help you with this. Finding that person will be your biggest problem. Someone older than 40 who’s been a locksmith all their life is who your looking for. Someone who, when you ask if they cut Ace keys, doesn’t hesitate to say yes. Some suggestions I have would be to dremel the key out. By cutting it almost flush with the lock and then dissecting it until you can remove it. An tubular pick will then allow you to reset your lock. No pick, then you will then need a new key that’s modified by cutting away the indexing tab so that you can return the lock to the resting position. The modified key will need to be discarded after you’ve reset your lock. Easy peasy.

Would the customer be in the wrong for not paying? : Locksmith

Yes You still make them pay a service call.

If you call a plumber or AC tech you will expect to pay a service call. Same applies with locksmiths.

($20,$30) this doesnt happen alot but i can give a bunch of scenarios where we are called nothing is opened and a service call still needs to get paid.

A Locksmith should never give up and really should be able to open 85% of cars. But if you run into a car with a Dead battery, broken handles, high security keys in trunk (anyone that opens alot of cars know some keys in the truck scenarios need new keys generated and i wouldnt blame a new locksmith for not knowing how to make a 98 jaguar keys.

Anyone know much about these t-handle shed locks? Lockcodes says mk1 is a y11. Mk1 is supposed to be the master for these. It fits but the cuts are wrong. 036 is the user key and it brings up k1 keyway. Both say use card cx32. Neither work. I know I can just replace them for cheap enough.
